President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that his administration will seek to designate Ecuador a major nonโ€‘NATO ally, a move that would deepen U.S. security ties with the South American nation under President Danielโ€ฏNoboaโ€™s leadership. The proposal comes after Ecuador restored its extradition treaty with the United States in early 2024 and signed new agreements to expand military, intelligence and lawโ€‘enforcement cooperation.

Ecuadorโ€™s shift toward Washington marks a sharp reversal from the previous leftโ€‘leaning governments that had limited cooperation with U.S. agencies and questioned U.S. influence in the region. Since taking office in May 2023, Noboa has pursued a proโ€‘business agenda, sought foreign investment, and prioritized security reforms to combat drug trafficking and organized crime. Restoring the extradition treaty, which had been suspended in 2019, signaled Quitoโ€™s willingness to align with U.S. lawโ€‘enforcement priorities and opened the door for joint training, equipment sharing and intelligence exchanges.

U.S. officials say the major nonโ€‘NATO ally status would give Ecuador access to advanced weapons, accelerated procurement processes and training programs that are otherwise reserved for close partners such as Israel, Jordan and Australia. In a briefing, a State Department spokesperson noted that the designation could help curb the flow of cocaine through Ecuadorโ€™s ports, a critical node in the regional drug trade. Congressional leaders from both parties have expressed support, citing the need for a stronger foothold in the Western Hemisphere as China and Russia expand their influence in Latin America.

If the Senate confirms the designation, Ecuador would join a select group of countries with enhanced U.S. security benefits, potentially reshaping the balance of power in the Andes. The administration plans to finalize the request by the end of the month, while Quito is preparing to negotiate specific terms for equipment deliveries and joint patrols. Observers say the move could encourage other Latin American states to deepen ties with Washington, but also risk provoking regional rivals who view U.S. military outreach with suspicion.
