The Trump administration has ordered around 50 Pentagon officials to take polygraph tests as part of a crackdown on information leaks regarding U.S. weapons stockpiles in the Middle East. This decision was reported by The New York Times and comes amid increasing concerns about the availability of critical munitions, particularly long-range missiles and Patriot interceptors, as the U.S. continues its military operations in the region.

The polygraph tests were carried out in August, with additional testing reportedly happening earlier in the summer for officials at U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM). President Trump recently accused unnamed staff members of making โ€œtreasonous statementsโ€ to the media, further intensifying the ongoing investigation into the leaks, which also involves the Department of Justice and the FBI. The administration has denied any claims of depleted weapon stockpiles, asserting that it maintains โ€œmassive amountsโ€ of weaponry.

During the polygraph examinations, personnel were questioned about whether they disclosed classified information concerning dwindling munitions supplies to journalists. CBS News reported that the scope of these tests extended to broader national security matters, although sources indicated that no officials failed the questions designed to identify potential leakers. The investigation aims not only to uncover those responsible for the leaks but also to serve as a deterrent against future disclosures.

The issue of U.S. weapons reserves has gained urgency as the military continues airstrikes on Iran and faces challenges in replenishing expensive defensive systems like Patriot missiles. As the conflict escalates, the Pentagon's ability to maintain adequate supplies has become a critical topic. General Dan Caine, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, was not subjected to the polygraph testing, and while the Pentagon has refrained from commenting on the specifics of the tests, a spokesperson emphasized the seriousness with which the Department views leaks of classified information.
