Doug Ford unveils billboard rejecting Trump's "Lake America" near Hamilton

The billboard follows a Trump executive order issued Thursday that re‑named the Great Lake as “Lake America.” The order drew criticism from allies, including Vermont Governor Phil Scott, who called it “petty and disappointing,” and prompted calls from several politicians for Trump to return to the negotiating table. Canada is a top U.S. trading partner, the largest destination for U.S. exports, and the trade war has spurred boycotts of U.S. goods and bans on U.S. liquor in some provinces. Ford has positioned himself as a hard‑line voice for Canadian retaliation, calling for Canada to cede sovereignty to the U.S. and imposing tariffs on Canadian goods.

Ford’s billboard is the latest in a series of stunts aimed at Trump, following a 50‑per‑cent tariff on $20 billion of Canadian goods after failed trade talks. In a Toronto radio interview, Ford said, “He can kiss my a** as far as I’m concerned. We’re going to go at him full steam.” Trump responded on Truth Social, mocking Ford as “less charismatic, intelligent, and overall unimpressive” compared to his late brother, former Toronto mayor Rob Ford, and warned that “the consequences for Canada will be far WORSE.” The two leaders’ feud highlights the escalating tensions as Canada considers further measures to protect its economy and sovereignty.
