The ten largest public companies in the AI sector have a combined market capitalization exceeding $25 trillion, surpassing the GDP of all countries except the U.S. Nvidia leads with a $5.1 trillion vโ€ฆ

A debate over who should steer the future of artificial intelligence has resurfaced after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei urged a slowdown in AI development and called for stricter regulation. The comment came amid growing concerns about the speed at which AI systems are being built and deployed. In response, former U.S. President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social that the United States already possesses โ€œtremendous criminal and regulatory powerโ€ over AI firms and dismissed safety worries as a Chinaโ€‘centric conspiracy. He said the winner of the AI race would win outright.

The conversation is happening as governments try to catch up with an industry that is advancing faster than any previous technology wave. The stakes are high because AI touches everything from healthcare to national security. Alโ€ฏJazeeraโ€™s latest piece examines the companies that are driving the race and the trillions of dollars behind them. Chatbots and largeโ€‘language models are only the visible tip of a much larger ecosystem that includes hardware, infrastructure and software. The industry can be split into three groups: chip makers that design the hardware AI runs on, companies that turn raw chips into usable computing power, and firms that deliver AI products to consumers and businesses.

The ten biggest public companies with direct AI exposure have a combined market capitalisation of at least $25โ€ฏtrillion, a figure larger than the GDP of every country except the United States and bigger than the entire Chinese economy. Nvidia leads the pack with a market cap of roughly $5.1โ€ฏtrillion as of midโ€‘Septemberโ€ฏ2026, thanks to its GPUs and AI accelerators that power leading models. Apple, a hardware giant, has invested heavily in onโ€‘device AI and its $4.86โ€ฏtrillion market cap makes it one of the most valuable firms with AI exposure. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is the worldโ€™s largest chipmaker, with a $1.9โ€ฏtrillion market cap and over 70โ€ฏpercent of the global foundry market, producing advanced chips for Nvidia, Broadcom and AMD.

Beyond the public sector, several private AI companies are valued in the billions and could go public in the near future. The debate over regulation and control of AI will likely intensify as these companies continue to grow. The outcome will shape the direction of a technology that already outstrips the economic size of most nations and will have lasting impacts on society, commerce and security.
