A light aircraft crashed in the Swiss Alps on Saturday, killing three people, including a Welsh businessman, the Swiss Federal Office of Civil Aviation said. The accident occurred near the ski resort of Saas-Fee, a popular destination for winter sports and summer hiking. The aircraft, a Cessna 172, was on a flight from Geneva to Saasโ€‘Fee when it lost altitude and hit a ridge at about 2,400 metres. Authorities confirmed the bodies of the pilot, the Welsh businessman and a German tourist were recovered from the wreckage.

The incident comes at a time when the Alps are experiencing a record number of visitors. Saasโ€‘Fee welcomed more than 1.5โ€ฏmillion tourists last year, and the region depends heavily on tourism revenue. Lightโ€‘aircraft accidents in mountainous terrain are rare, but they attract intense scrutiny because of the difficult flying conditions. The planeโ€™s flight data recorder is being analyzed, and Swiss investigators are examining weather reports that indicated a sudden drop in visibility and a gusty wind shift. The pilot, who held a private pilot licence, had a clean safety record, but the investigation will look at whether the aircraftโ€™s maintenance or a mechanical fault contributed to the crash.

Swiss police and the Air Force are coordinating the search and recovery operation. The wreckage was found in a remote valley, and the recovery team had to use a helicopter to reach the site. Officials have requested the families of the victims for statements and are offering support through the local emergency services. The resortโ€™s management has issued a statement expressing condolences and promises to provide assistance to those affected. The crash raises questions about the regulation of small aircraft operations in highโ€‘altitude areas and may prompt a review of safety protocols for flights into popular Alpine resorts.
