Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado was turned away from her homeland three times within 24 hours on Tuesday, after trying to enter by both air and sea, her adviser David Smolansky told The Hill. Machado, who won the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for her work on democracy and human rights, was forced to abort each attempt and remain in exile. The government’s immigration officials cited “national security” as the reason for denying her entry.

Machado has been a central figure in the fight against President Nicolás Maduro’s socialist regime since she co‑founded the opposition coalition Un Nuevo Tiempo in 2006 and later led the Democratic Unity Roundtable. She was barred from running in the 2018 presidential race and again in the 2024 election after a Supreme Court ruling declared her “ineligible” for alleged ties to foreign funding. Fleeing Venezuela in early 2024, she settled in the United States, where she continued to campaign for free elections and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in December 2025. Her attempted return comes as the opposition seeks to regroup ahead of the July 2026 municipal elections, which many see as a litmus test for Maduro’s grip on power.

Maduro’s government issued a brief statement saying Machado’s “illegal attempts to breach Venezuelan sovereignty will not be tolerated.” The Ministry of Interior added that the opposition leader’s presence could “destabilise the nation.” In response, the U.S. State Department condemned the denials, calling them “unacceptable” and warning of further sanctions if the government continues to block political dissidents. Opposition parties in Caracas rallied outside the airport, chanting “Machado vuelve” and demanding her right to return. Human‑rights groups have also filed a petition with the Inter‑American Commission on Human Rights, arguing that the repeated refusals violate international norms on freedom of movement.

The episode is likely to heighten diplomatic pressure on Caracas as the United States and several European nations prepare to discuss Venezuela at the upcoming CELAC summit in November. Analysts say the government’s hard line could backfire, galvanising protest and prompting more defections from the ruling United Socialist Party. For Machado, the next steps may involve legal challenges in Venezuelan courts or renewed appeals to the international community to secure safe passage. The standoff underscores the fragile state of Venezuela’s political landscape and the growing contest between authoritarian control and opposition resurgence.
