Google recently announced a major improvement to Android’s Photo Picker . The photo picker will allow users to choose whether to keep or remove location data in shared images. It seems like the waiting is over if you really want to try this feature.

You’re reading an Authority Insights story. Authority Insights brings you all the latest exclusive reports, app teardowns, leaks, and in-depth tech coverage from the Android Authority team that you won’t find anywhere else.

Google has rolled out the Photo Picker’s location metadata API with the August Mainline Android update, and it looks like Snapseed (v4.1.5.970833206) has already implemented this functionality. As a result, Snapseed now displays a prompt to include an image’s location info when you choose an image to edit via Android’s Photo Picker. Check out the first screenshot below.

We can also see a floating location info toggle in the bottom-right corner of the Photo Picker. Tapping this button lets you quickly enable or disable access to location metadata, with a crossed-out icon indicating that location data isn’t being shared. I’m guessing this could be useful if you made the wrong choice via the preceding pop-up menu.

We’re glad to see the first apps embracing this new API, as it gives users greater control over some sensitive data. Photo editing apps on Android often strip out location data, so the ability to retain this info for specific images is pretty handy. On the other hand, the ability to manually remove location data is extremely useful for sensitive photos.
