Sean Ward, a 33โ€‘yearโ€‘old man from Quinte West, died on Monday night after being shot by Belleville police outside a synagogue on Yomโ€ฏKippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. Police said the incident occurred just after sunset on the evening of Septemberโ€ฏ23, when officers responded to a report of a man brandishing a weapon near the Beth Shalom Temple in downtown Belleville. Ward was taken to hospital in critical condition and later pronounced dead. Ontarioโ€™s Special Investigations Unit, the civilian agency that reviews police shootings, confirmed his death.

The shooting has heightened anxiety in Canadaโ€™s Jewish community, which has seen a rise in hateโ€‘motivated incidents over the past year. In 2023, the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs recorded a 30โ€ฏpercent increase in antiโ€‘Jewish crimes nationwide, prompting calls for stronger security at places of worship. The attack took place during Yomโ€ฏKippur services, a time when many Jews gather for prayer and reflection, amplifying fears that the assault was driven by religious hatred. Community leaders have warned that such incidents threaten the sense of safety that congregants expect during holy days.

Belleville police said officers arrived after receiving a 911 call about a โ€œdisturbanceโ€ and a โ€œperson with a knifeโ€ near the templeโ€™s entrance. Ward was reportedly acting erratically and refused to comply with commands to drop the weapon. After a brief exchange, officers discharged their firearms, striking Ward. The Special Investigations Unit has opened a mandatory investigation into the use of force, as required by provincial law, and will interview the officers, review bodyโ€‘camera footage, and assess whether the shooting was justified. A spokesperson for the Jewish Community Centre of Belleville expressed relief that no worshippers were injured and urged a thorough, transparent inquiry.

The SIU is expected to release its findings within 30โ€ฏdays, after which the Crown prosecutor will decide whether any criminal charges are warranted. In the meantime, the synagogue has announced plans to increase security, including hiring additional guards and installing more surveillance cameras. Provincial officials have pledged to work with Jewish groups to bolster protection for places of worship across Ontario. The incident underscores ongoing concerns about hateโ€‘based violence and the need for vigilant community safety measures.
