Blue House Productions, the Manchester‑based co‑producer of the comedy series Small Prophets, announced on Tuesday that it has hired Shaunna O’Brien from fellow UK outfit Sister as its new Development Producer. O’Brien will join the label to identify and shepherd original comedy and comedy‑drama projects from concept to pitch.

The move comes as British broadcasters and streaming services double down on home‑grown comedy to fill increasingly crowded schedules. Blue House, which has built a reputation for low‑budget, high‑concept humor, is looking to broaden its slate beyond the modest success of Small Prophets. O’Brien brings a track record of shepherding series such as The End of the F***ing World and I May Destroy You through Sister’s development pipeline, giving Blue House a proven talent scout at a time when competition for creative executives is fierce. Industry observers note that the hiring signals Blue House’s intent to compete for larger commissions from Channel 4, the BBC and global platforms like Netflix.

In a statement, Blue House said O’Brien will “lead the discovery of fresh voices and stories that reflect the diversity and wit of contemporary Britain.” O’Brien, who spent the past five years at Sister rising from Development Assistant to senior executive, said she was attracted by Blue House’s “nimble structure and appetite for risk‑taking comedy.” The company also confirmed that it currently has three original concepts in early development, two of which are comedy‑drama pilots slated for script delivery by the end of the year.

The appointment positions Blue House to announce new projects in the coming months, with expectations that at least one will secure a commission before the 2025 broadcast season. Analysts say the hire could accelerate the label’s push into the lucrative mid‑tier market, where original comedy commands strong advertiser and subscriber interest. If O’Brien’s track record holds, Blue House may soon move from co‑producing niche titles to leading the creation of flagship British comedies that could find homes on both domestic channels and international streaming services.
