ScrollEd, a Palo Alto startup founded by student spouses Utsav Gupta and Rebecca Neff, unveiled a new platform that turns traditional textbooks into a scrollable, Instagramโ€‘style feed packed with video, audio and quizzes at this weekโ€™s TechCrunch Disrupt. The demo showed a highโ€‘school biology chapter that users could swipe through, tap a short animation, listen to a narrated explanation and answer a popโ€‘up question before moving on.

The launch comes as schools and universities scramble to replace printed books with digital content that keeps students engaged. The pandemic forced many institutions to adopt online learning, but teachers quickly found that static PDFs and PDFsโ€‘like eโ€‘books did not hold attention. At the same time, shortโ€‘form video apps such as TikTok have shown that learners gravitate toward biteโ€‘sized, visually rich media. ScrollEdโ€™s founders say they built the platform to bridge that gap, using familiar scrolling mechanics to make learning feel like social media rather than a chore.

Investors appear interested. ScrollEd secured a seed round of $2.1โ€ฏmillion from a mix of angel investors and educationโ€‘focused venture firms shortly before the Disrupt showcase. Early testers, including a pilot program at a California charter school, reported a 30โ€ฏpercent increase in completion rates for assigned readings. Educators at the event praised the ability to embed assessments directly into the flow of content, noting that it could reduce the time spent grading and give instant feedback to students.

The company plans to roll out a beta version to a broader set of schools this fall, with a subscription model aimed at districts that want to replace their existing textbook contracts. Gupta and Neff said they will continue to add subjectโ€‘specific libraries and integrate analytics that help teachers track individual progress. If the platform gains traction, it could reshape how educational publishers package their material and push more schools toward interactive, mobileโ€‘first learning solutions.
