A nurse at a Baltimore hospital will spend a month in jail after stealing morphine that was meant for a 10โ€‘yearโ€‘old girl who had just undergone openโ€‘heart surgery. The nurse, who worked in the pediatric intensiveโ€‘care unit, took six doses of the medication and injected herself, using the drug that had been prescribed for the childโ€™s severe postโ€‘operative pain. She was caught when a pharmacist noticed the missing medication and the nurse was arrested on charges of theft and drug possession. The Maryland court sentenced her to 30 days of incarceration, two years of probation, and mandatory drugโ€‘treatment counseling. Her nursing license will be suspended pending review.

The case comes at a time when hospitals are under scrutiny for medication safety and for the wellโ€‘being of their staff. In the last decade, the United States has seen a surge in opioid misuse, and nurses are often on the front lines of pain management. Pediatric patients are especially vulnerable, and any deviation from protocol can have serious consequences. The hospital had recently implemented a new medicationโ€‘audit system after a 2019 incident that exposed weaknesses in how controlled substances were stored and monitored. This incident shows that even with safeguards, staff can still exploit systems for personal gain.

According to the court documents, the nurse pleaded guilty to two counts of theft of a controlled substance and one count of possession of a controlled substance. She admitted that she had used the morphine for herself after feeling stressed and overwhelmed by her workload. The hospitalโ€™s spokesperson said the nurseโ€™s actions โ€œbetray a serious breach of trustโ€ and that the institution is reviewing its policies on staff mentalโ€‘health support and medication storage. The child who received the stolen medication is reportedly recovering and has no lasting harm from the missing doses.

Following her release, the nurse will be required to complete a stateโ€‘approved substanceโ€‘abuse program and will be monitored under a probation order that includes regular drug testing
