A fiveโ€‘year longitudinal study published this week found little evidence that use of social technologies predicts adult life satisfaction, researchers reported. The study, led by a team at the University of Oxford in partnership with the University of Michigan, tracked 12,000 participants in the United Kingdom, United States and Canada from 2018 to 2023. Over the period, respondents reported the amount of time they spent on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and messaging apps, as well as their overall sense of wellโ€‘being. The analysis showed that changes in socialโ€‘tech use were not linked to measurable shifts in life satisfaction, after accounting for age, income, health and baseline happiness levels.

The findings arrive amid a longโ€‘standing debate about whether digital communication tools help or harm mental health. Early crossโ€‘sectional surveys in the 2010s suggested that heavy socialโ€‘media users reported lower happiness, prompting headlines about a โ€œdigital depressionโ€ epidemic. The COVIDโ€‘19 pandemic intensified the conversation, as lockdowns drove a surge in online interaction and policymakers considered regulation of tech companies. Critics argued that most prior research could not establish cause and effect because it relied on singleโ€‘timeโ€‘point surveys that captured only snapshots of behavior. A longitudinal approach, following the same people over several years, offers a clearer view of whether socialโ€‘tech habits actually shape wellโ€‘being over time.

The Oxfordโ€‘Michigan team measured life satisfaction with the standard Cantril Ladder, a scale from 0 to 10, and recorded average daily screen time for social platforms. Across the sample, a oneโ€‘hour increase in daily socialโ€‘tech use corresponded to a 0.02โ€‘point change in satisfactionโ€”statistically insignificant and far below the threshold for a meaningful impact. โ€œOur data suggest that the relationship is far more nuanced than the alarmist narratives,โ€ said Dr. Eleanor Hughes, lead author and professor of psychology at Oxford. Mentalโ€‘health advocates welcomed the nuance but cautioned that the study does not rule out harms for specific groups, such as adolescents or people with preโ€‘existing anxiety. The researchers plan to extend the study to younger cohorts and to examine how content typeโ€”passive scrolling versus active creationโ€”might affect outcomes. Policymakers are likely to use the results to temper calls for sweeping regulation, while still monitoring the evolving digital landscape for vulnerable populations.
