Judd Apatowโ€™s new documentary โ€œNorm,โ€ set to debut on Netflix in November, released its first trailer on Tuesday, showing the late comedian speaking for himself through archival footage and rare interviews. The film, produced by Apatow and directed by Chris Foster, follows the arc of Norm Macdonaldโ€™s career from his early days on โ€œSaturday Night Liveโ€ to his final standโ€‘up specials, and it will be streamed worldwide on Netflix starting November 15.

The trailer arrives months after Macdonaldโ€™s death in September 2021, a loss that left a gap in the comedy world. In recent years, streaming platforms have turned to biographical documentaries to honor iconic performers, and Netflix has been building a slate of comedyโ€‘focused films. Apatow, who worked with Macdonald on the โ€œThe 40-Yearโ€‘Old Virginโ€ set and shared a longโ€‘standing friendship, said he wanted to let the comedianโ€™s own voice carry the story, rather than a conventional narrator. The approach reflects a broader trend of letting subjects speak directly through archival material, giving audiences an unfiltered glimpse of their personality.

The trailer highlights Macdonaldโ€™s dry wit and his willingness to push boundaries, featuring clips from his infamous โ€œWeekend Updateโ€ monologues and his later podcast โ€œNorm Macdonald Live.โ€ Netflix also announced that the platform will release three more documentaries in October: a look at cult musicianโ€‘comedian Martin Mull, a profile of standโ€‘up pioneer Maria Bamford, and a deep dive into the groundbreaking sketch series โ€œSCTV.โ€ Industry analysts see the rollout as Netflixโ€™s effort to solidify its reputation as the home for comedy history, appealing to both older fans and younger viewers discovering these legends.

Netflix plans to promote โ€œNormโ€ with a virtual Q&A featuring Apatow, Foster, and several comedians who worked with Macdonald. The event will stream live on the serviceโ€™s platform and on social media. If the documentary draws strong viewership, it could encourage further projects that preserve comedyโ€™s oral history, ensuring that voices like Macdonaldโ€™s remain accessible to new generations.
