A cyberโ€‘crime syndicate operating out of Laos and Cambodia has forced Indian computer engineers into indentured servitude, using them to run romanceโ€‘scam operations that have stolen billions of dollars, NPR reported on Tuesday. The revelation came from Wired senior writer Andyโ€ฏGreenberg, who described how a young engineer who called himself โ€œRedโ€ฏBullโ€ was lured to the region with a promise of a wellโ€‘paid IT job, only to have his passport confiscated and his labor coerced into defrauding victims worldwide.

The scheme reflects a broader surge in sophisticated online fraud as artificialโ€‘intelligence tools make deceptive emails and messages easier to produce. Recruiters exploit the global shortage of tech talent, promising remote work that turns out to be a trap. Once the engineers arrive, they are confined in a compound with poor living conditions, forced to manage WhatsApp groups and fake profiles that lure strangers into romance scams. The victims are told they are investing in a โ€œgreat opportunityโ€ or are being courted by a lover, then pressured to send money, often in increments of $250โ€‘$350. The operationโ€™s scale has grown alongside the pandemicโ€‘era shift to digital communication, giving traffickers a larger pool of potential prey.

Greenberg obtained three months of internal video footage and chat logs that expose the daily routine inside the compound. The recordings show supervisors monitoring the engineersโ€™ output, demanding higher conversion rates, and threatening punishment for missed targets. In one instance, the syndicate impersonated NPRโ€™s Fresh Air, sending authors fake invitations to appear on the program and demanding payment to cover โ€œinterview costs.โ€ The scammersโ€™ use of a reputable media brand highlights how the group leverages trusted names to extract money from unsuspecting creators. Greenbergโ€™s investigation will appear in his forthcoming book, *The Grayscale*, which promises a deeper look at the networkโ€™s hierarchy and its ties to other illicit cryptocurrency operations.

Lawโ€‘enforcement agencies in the United States and Southeast Asia have opened joint inquiries after the Fresh Air episode went public. Advocates for victims of online romance fraud are urging platforms to tighten verification and for governments to crack down on humanโ€‘trafficking pipelines that feed cyberโ€‘crime labs. Greenberg says exposing the internal communications may give authorities the evidence needed to dismantle the ring, but warns that the modelโ€”combining forced tech labor with AIโ€‘enhanced scamsโ€”could quickly reappear elsewhere if not addressed.
