Rescue teams search for survivors after Delhi building collapse kills six

A multistorey building in New Delhi collapsed on Sunday, killing at least six people and trapping many others inside. The incident occurred in Satya Niketan, an area near a Delhi University campus, where rescue teams have been mobilized to search through the rubble for survivors.

This tragedy comes during a season when building collapses are common in India, particularly due to heavy rains that weaken structures. The rainy season typically lasts from June to September, and officials have warned that many buildings may not meet safety standards. Just the day before, a similar incident occurred in northern India when a three-storey building fell, although no casualties were reported in that case.

Authorities are working tirelessly to locate and rescue those still trapped. Fire officer Abhilash Malik estimates that up to 40 people could be under the debris. Rescue crews from India’s disaster response agency, alongside police and firefighters, have been using earthmovers and detection dogs in their efforts. A nearby building has been evacuated due to fears of a potential collapse. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta emphasized the urgency of saving lives, stating, “The most important thing for us is to save the lives of these students.”

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered condolences to the victims' families and assured that authorities would take action against those responsible. “We won’t spare the guilty,” Gupta added. The full scope of the tragedy remains unclear, but the loss of life and the ongoing search efforts underscore the urgent need for improved building safety regulations in the country.
