GM drops Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, impacting 300,000 U.S. sales

General Motors has confirmed it will not reintroduce Apple CarPlay or Android Auto phone projection in any of its vehicles, following the removal of the feature in recent models.

The move comes after GM announced in 2023 that it would phase out phoneโ€‘projection support from its infotainment systems to cut costs and simplify the software stack. CarPlay and Android Auto are the industry standard for smartphone connectivity, offering navigation, music, and voice commands. Many drivers have come to expect them as a baseline feature, and competitors such as Ford, Toyota, and Tesla still provide full support. GMโ€™s decision has sparked frustration among owners of models that previously included the feature, such as the Chevy Silverado, Camaro, and Cadillac Escalade.

GM said the change is part of a broader strategy to develop a unified, futureโ€‘ready infotainment platform that will eventually replace CarPlay and Android Auto. The automaker cited the need for tighter integration with its own โ€œOnStarโ€ services and a shift toward a more secure, dataโ€‘centric ecosystem. About 300,000 vehicles sold in the U.S. last year will be affected. Analysts warn that the lack of popular smartphone integration could hurt GMโ€™s competitiveness in the infotainment market, pushing some customers toward aftermarket head units or competitors that still support the platforms.

Looking ahead, GM plans to roll out its new โ€œGMC Connectโ€ platform in 2025, which will combine navigation, media, and vehicle data into a single interface. The company also announced a partnership with Qualcomm to develop a nextโ€‘generation head unit. GM will monitor consumer response closely and may reconsider the decision if demand remains high. The move underscores the growing tension between automakersโ€™ desire for proprietary control and driversโ€™ expectations for seamless smartphone integration.
