The Spiritual Safety Center unveiled a nationwide โ€œSpiritual Safety Scaleโ€ on Tuesday, accompanied by the first largeโ€‘scale survey of how safe worshippers feel in their religious communities. The tool, developed by a coalition of scholars, clergy and mentalโ€‘health professionals, will be available to churches, synagogues, mosques and temples across the United States starting this month.

The launch comes amid growing concern over abuse, harassment and mentalโ€‘health crises within faith settings. Highโ€‘profile scandals at major denominations have prompted calls for clearer accountability, while studies from the Pew Research Center show that more than a third of Americans say they have witnessed or experienced spiritual trauma. Until now, there has been no standard way to gauge the prevalence of such harm or to track progress on creating safer environments. The new scale aims to fill that gap by offering a simple, evidenceโ€‘based questionnaire that can be administered anonymously.

The pilot survey, conducted with 12,000 participants from 500 congregations, asked respondents to rate their sense of safety in areas such as leadership transparency, emotional support and protection from coercion. Preliminary results indicate that 42โ€ฏ% of participants feel โ€œmoderatelyโ€ or โ€œveryโ€ unsafe in at least one domain, with younger adults reporting the highest levels of discomfort. Leaders from several major faith bodies, including the United Methodist Church and the Reform Judaism movement, have praised the effort, saying it provides โ€œa vital barometerโ€ for congregational health. Critics, however, warn that the tool could be misused to label entire traditions as unsafe without context.

The Spiritual Safety Center plans to roll out training modules next quarter to help religious leaders interpret the data and implement reforms. It also intends to publish an annual report that tracks changes over time, hoping to create a benchmark for spiritual wellโ€‘being comparable to existing health metrics. If widely adopted, the scale could reshape how faith communities assess risk, allocate resources and rebuild trust with members who have long felt vulnerable.
