Google has officially unveiled the Googlebook line, a series of five Androidโ€‘powered laptops that will start at $899 and begin shipping in November. The devices will run Android 14 with deep Chrome OS integration, offering a unified experience for users who want to switch between phone and laptop without losing apps or data. Preโ€‘orders opened this week on the Google Store, and the first models will be available in the United States, the United Kingdom and select EU markets.

The launch marks the culmination of years of Googleโ€™s effort to bring Android to larger screens. In 2017 the company released the Pixelbook, a highโ€‘end Chrome OS device that could run Android apps, but it never gained traction. Since then, Chrome OS has added a native Android runtime, and the ecosystem now supports thousands of apps on laptops and tablets. Competitors such as Samsung and Lenovo have been shipping Androidโ€‘based laptops, and Microsoftโ€™s Windows 11 is pushing for seamless phoneโ€‘PC integration. Googleโ€™s move aims to close the gap and give Android users a true laptop option that feels like an extension of their phones.

The five models span a range of form factors, from a 13โ€‘inch ultrabook with a 1080p display to a 15โ€‘inch premium device featuring a 2K screen, 16โ€ฏGB of RAM and up to 1โ€ฏTB of SSD storage. Prices start at $899 for the base 13โ€‘inch model and top out at $1,699 for the highโ€‘end 15โ€‘inch version. All units will support Googleโ€™s โ€œInstant Tetheringโ€ to connect automatically to a userโ€™s Android phone for internet, and they will ship with a builtโ€‘in fingerprint sensor and a detachable keyboard option. Analysts at Counterpoint Research see the line as a potential catalyst for Androidโ€™s PC market share, noting that the price points are competitive with entryโ€‘level Windows laptops. Some critics, however, warn that the lack of a full desktop OS may limit appeal to power users.

Google says preโ€‘orders will be fulfilled on a firstโ€‘come, firstโ€‘served basis, with shipments beginning in late November and expanding to more regions in early 2025. The company will also roll out a developer program to encourage app optimization for larger screens, promising updates that blur the line between phone and laptop. If the Googlebooks achieve strong sales, they could reshape how Android users think about productivity, and they may push other manufacturers to accelerate their own Androidโ€‘centric laptop offerings.
