General Motors said on Tuesday that its upcoming Silverado and Sierra trucks will feature a refreshed software interface that includes Appleโ€ฏCarPlay and Androidโ€ฏAuto, but the automaker clarified it is not โ€œbringing backโ€ a service that was never removed from those models. The announcement follows GMโ€™s decision last year to drop CarPlay and Androidโ€ฏAuto from its firstโ€‘generation electric pickups, the Chevrolet Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV, sparking criticism from owners who rely on the phoneโ€‘mirroring apps for navigation and media.

The confusion stems from GMโ€™s 2023 rollout, when it announced that the new electric trucks would launch without the two platforms to simplify software integration and reduce costs. The decision was driven by the companyโ€™s push to develop its own infotainment ecosystem, Ultiumโ€ฏConnect, and to meet safetyโ€‘related software standards more easily. However, the move left a segment of buyers feeling shortโ€‘changed, especially as competitors like Ford and Rivian kept CarPlay and Androidโ€ฏAuto in their EVs. The recent software update for the gasolineโ€‘powered Silverado and Sierra is meant to address that gap and reassure consumers that traditional connectivity remains available on its conventional trucks.

GMโ€™s spokesperson said the updated interface will roll out later this year via overโ€‘theโ€‘air updates and will not affect the existing EV models, which will continue to run Ultiumโ€ฏConnect exclusively. Analysts note that keeping CarPlay and Androidโ€ฏAuto on its bestโ€‘selling trucks helps GM maintain its market share in a segment where 78โ€ฏpercent of buyers expect smartphone integration. Consumer advocacy groups have welcomed the clarification, urging the company to consider adding the apps to its electric lineup in future updates.

The rollout is slated for the fourth quarter, with GM promising a seamless transition for owners who already have the trucks. If the update proves successful, the automaker may revisit its strategy for the electric Silverado and Sierra, potentially offering a hybrid solution that blends Ultiumโ€ฏConnect with the popular phoneโ€‘mirroring apps. The move underscores how crucial thirdโ€‘party connectivity has become in the broader push toward electrification and digital services in vehicles.
