A Georgia Department of Agriculture officer shot and killed a baby donkey named "HeeHaw" during a search for a missing 2-year-old boy on Sunday.

Local deputies and wildlife officers were combing rural terrain near Sylvania, about 60 miles southeast of Augusta, after the toddler vanished from his home. The boy was found unharmed hours later, but not before the officer encountered the donkey near a wooded area and opened fire. Authorities have not explained why the animal was perceived as a threat. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is now reviewing the shooting as part of a broader review of police use of force in rural searches.

Donkeys are common livestock in parts of rural Georgia, often roaming freely on private property. The incident highlights the risks of armed officers being deployed in search-and-rescue operations where their presence may escalate tensions with animals or residents. Animal rights groups have criticized the killing of HeeHaw as unnecessary and called for better training for officers handling non-human encounters during critical searches.

The Georgia Department of Agriculture, which oversees animal control and livestock issues, has launched an internal probe into the officerโ€™s actions. Meanwhile, the boyโ€™s family has remained silent, while neighbors described the area as quiet and unlikely to harbor threats. The case is expected to draw further scrutiny over how law enforcement balances safety with the unpredictability of rural environments. Animal welfare advocates have already called for clearer guidelines on when force is justified against animals during searches for missing people.
