France has officially recorded its hottest summer ever in 2026, with temperatures soaring across Europe. French Environment Minister Monique Barbut announced the milestone during a presentation of the summer climate report, highlighting the extreme conditions that have affected the continent this year.

This record-breaking summer follows a series of severe heatwaves that have plagued France, including one in late June that set a new intensity record. The effects have been deadly, with the French Health Minister Stephanie Rist reporting an unprecedented 2,025 excess deaths during the heatwave. The majority of those affected were individuals aged over 45. Another heatwave persisted from late July into August, equaling a previous 23-day record from 1983. These extreme weather conditions were compounded by major wildfires, even in areas of France that are typically cooler and wetter.

According to the national weather agency Meteo France, the summer of 2026 recorded an average temperature of 24 degrees Celsius (75 degrees Fahrenheit), which is 3.6 degrees Celsius (6.5 degrees Fahrenheit) above the normal average. Rainfall was notably low, with a nearly 40 percent deficit, making it the second driest summer since records began. Barbut emphasized the significance of this summer, urging that it should prompt serious reflection on future climate challenges. She posed a crucial question about whether this will be remembered as the first of many record-breaking summers or as a turning point for climate action.

In response to the alarming conditions, Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu has assigned Barbut the task of expediting France's national climate change adaptation plan. She promised to deliver actionable conclusions by the end of September, including a five-year funding strategy. As extreme weather continues to affect millions across Europe, the urgency for effective climate solutions grows more pressing. Europe is already recognized as the fastest-warming continent, with temperatures rising at twice the global average since the 1980s, according to the European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service.
