Cable cut, software bug ground 350 flights at East Coast airports

A fiber-optic cable cut and software failure grounded flights at major East Coast hubs, causing over 350 delays. This incident exposes critical infrastructure vulnerabilities in the U.S. aviation sysโ€ฆ

Flights halted at major airports after an air traffic control system failure and a fiberโ€‘optic cable was accidentally cut on Monday, causing widespread delays across the East Coast. The outage began around 8:15 a.m. when the FAAโ€‘managed system that coordinates takeโ€‘offs and landings at hubs such as JFK, Newark, and D.C. National failed to communicate with aircraft. A construction crew later discovered a broken fiberโ€‘optic line beneath a runway, which had been used to transmit realโ€‘time data between radar stations and the control center. The combined malfunction forced air traffic controllers to revert to manual procedures, and many flights were grounded or diverted.

The incident matters because the air traffic control system is the backbone of U.S. aviation safety. In the past year, the FAA has increased automation to reduce pilot workload and improve capacity, but this event exposed a critical vulnerability: a single point of failure in both software and physical infrastructure. The East Coast, a dense corridor that handles more than 80,000 daily flights, felt the impact immediately. By late afternoon, more than 350 flights had been delayed, and roughly 200 had been cancelled. Travelers were stranded at terminals, and airlines reported a spike in customer complaints. The FAA issued a statement saying the outage was โ€œunprecedentedโ€ and that a full investigation would follow.

Officials from the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have begun probing the cause of the software glitch, while the FAAโ€™s Office of Aviation System Engineering is working to patch the control software. At the same time, the agency is coordinating with the construction company responsible for the cable cut to assess whether safety protocols were breached. Airline CEOs have called for a review of the FAAโ€™s maintenance schedules, noting that โ€œwe cannot afford to have a single cable failure halt operations.โ€ Passengers are being offered refunds or vouchers, and the FAA has urged airlines to keep passengers informed as the situation unfolds.

Looking ahead, the FAA plans to install redundant fiberโ€‘optic pathways and upgrade the control systemโ€™s failโ€‘over capabilities. The NTSB will release a preliminary report within two weeks, and the FAA is expected to issue new guidelines for construction near critical aviation infrastructure. While flights are gradually resuming, the episode has highlighted the need for stronger safeguards in the U.S. air traffic network, especially as the industry prepares for the projected 30% increase in passenger traffic by 2030.
