The chair of the English Football Association (FA), Debbie Hewitt, has formally requested FIFA President Gianni Infantino to release all documents relating to the controversial proposal to sell a stake in the World Cup to private investors. This request comes ahead of the FIFA Council’s upcoming meeting on October 15, where the fallout from the abandoned plan is expected to be a key topic.

The push for transparency follows a significant backlash from various factions within the sport. Infantino's proposal faced strong opposition from UEFA, the governing body for European football, which threatened to boycott FIFA competitions if the idea was pursued further. This controversy has heightened scrutiny over FIFA's decision-making processes, particularly after Infantino's recent apology regarding how the private investment scheme was handled.

Hewitt, who also serves as a FIFA vice-president and member of the FIFA Council, is demanding full disclosure not only about the failed investor plan but also about the suspension of a ban on U.S. striker Folarin Balogun during the World Cup. This suspension reportedly followed a phone call from former U.S. President Donald Trump to Infantino, adding another layer of complexity to the ongoing situation. UEFA has expressed a loss of confidence in Infantino and has initiated legal actions in the U.S. to obtain documents related to the proposed sale.

As FIFA faces increasing pressure, Infantino has confirmed his intention to seek re-election in March 2024. Meanwhile, UEFA is working to identify a credible candidate to challenge him, with a deadline of November 18 for potential nominees. The outcome of this situation could significantly impact FIFA's governance and its relationship with major football associations worldwide, making the coming weeks critical for the future of the organization.
