Elif Eralpโ€™s The Left party (Dieโ€ฏLinke) won the most votes in Berlinโ€™s state election on Sunday, putting her on a clear path to become the cityโ€™s next governing mayor. The victory came as voters turned away from the farโ€‘right Alternative for Germany (AfD), which fell to third place, and gave The Left a plurality that will require coalition partners to form a government.

Eralp grew up in Munich as the daughter of Turkish socialists who fled the 1980 military coup. At ten, she organized handโ€‘painted environmental posters with friends in her familyโ€™s garage, and later accompanied her parents to political demonstrations. She joined The Left in 2017 after a decade as a legal adviser, served in the Berlin House of Representatives since 2021, and became deputy chair of the partyโ€™s parliamentary group in 2024. Her campaign promised affordable housing, rent caps, and greater political inclusion for immigrants and refugees.

The election results underline a shift in Berlinโ€™s political mood. The Left secured a plurality, but without an outright majority it must negotiate with other leftโ€‘leaning parties to take the mayorโ€™s office. Martin Fuchs, a German political and digital consultant, told Alโ€ฏJazeera that voters โ€œwanted disruption and radical political change.โ€ Eralpโ€™s platform contrasted sharply with the AfDโ€™s nationalist stance, emphasizing a โ€œsolidarity cityโ€ that would end stigmatizing police checks and expand municipal ownership of housing. In her victory speech she said the priority is making Berlin affordable for everyone.

If Eralp succeeds, she would become Berlinโ€™s first mayor of Turkish descent, its first woman of colour to hold the office, and the first The Left mayor since reunification. The coalition talks that follow will determine whether her ambitious socialโ€‘justice agenda can be implemented. Her rise signals a broader demand for diverse, progressive leadership in Germany, even as farโ€‘right parties continue to make gains elsewhere. The next weeks will reveal whether Berlin can translate this historic win into concrete policy changes.
