Dan Hillery: Digital Credit Could Rival BTCโ€™s $1.5 Trillion Market Cap

Dan Hillery, a senior analyst at UTXO, warned on Bitcoin Magazine that a digitalโ€‘credit ecosystem could soon challenge Bitcoinโ€™s $1.5 trillion market cap, citing a $16โ€ฏbillion market that has grown from almost nothing two years ago. The claim hinges on the rise of creditโ€‘like services built on top of Bitcoinโ€™s blockchain, where users borrow and lend Bitcoin without traditional banks. If the trend continues, the combined value of these credit contracts could rival the total value locked in the network itself.

The shift began as Bitcoinโ€™s price volatility made it attractive as collateral for loans. In 2021 and 2022, several projectsโ€”such as the Bitcoin Credit Protocol and Lightningโ€‘based lending platformsโ€”started offering interestโ€‘bearing accounts and overโ€‘collateralised borrowing. These services use smartโ€‘contractโ€‘like scripts on Bitcoinโ€™s UTXO model to lock coins, freeing them for use in other transactions while still maintaining the security guarantees of the main chain. By 2024, the total value of open credit positions had surged to roughly $16โ€ฏbillion, a figure that dwarfs the early days of Bitcoin credit, which was practically nonโ€‘existent.

Industry observers say the growth is driven by a mix of factors. First, the global push for decentralized finance (DeFi) has pushed Bitcoin beyond a store of value into a utility asset. Second, institutional demand for exposure to Bitcoin without the liquidity constraints of spot markets has increased. Third, the advent of layerโ€‘2 solutions has lowered transaction costs, making it cheaper to create and manage credit contracts. Regulators are watching closely, as the rise of onโ€‘chain credit could blur lines between traditional banking and crypto, raising questions about consumer protection and antiโ€‘moneyโ€‘laundering compliance.

Looking ahead, UTXOโ€™s Hillery predicts that if the digitalโ€‘credit market keeps growing at a compound annual growth rate of 30โ€‘40โ€ฏ%, it could reach $50โ€ฏbillion within three years, pushing it into the same ballpark as Bitcoinโ€™s current market cap. The next milestone will be whether these credit platforms can maintain solvency during market downturns, and whether they will attract institutional capital or face regulatory pushback. If they survive, they could transform Bitcoin from a โ€œdigital goldโ€ into a more versatile financial engine, reshaping how the world thinks about digital assets.
