A child born in Europe in 2025 will face more than three extra years of extreme fire weather compared with someone born in 1950, a new study finds. The research, published in *Environmental Research Letters*, says todayโ€™s babies could experience an 84โ€ฏ% rise in severe fireโ€‘related heat events over their lifetimes if current climate policies remain unchanged.

The finding comes as Europe grapples with a hotter, drier climate and a string of recordโ€‘breaking wildfires in recent years. Scientists say the trend reflects a broader shift toward more frequent and intense heat spikes that fuel dangerous fire conditions. The study examined historical weather data and projected future patterns under existing emission trajectories, highlighting that the risk is not a distant future scenario but an unfolding reality for the next generation.

According to the authors, 86โ€ฏ% of the projected increase in extreme fire weather is driven by climate change itself, not by longer life spans. The researchers calculated that a 2025โ€‘born European would live through roughly 5.5 years of such conditions, compared with 2.3 years for a 1950โ€‘born counterpart. The analysis covered the entire continent, noting that Southern and Eastern Europe face the steepest rises due to their already warm climates. The authors warn that without stronger mitigation efforts, the gap could widen further, exposing millions to heightened health, economic and ecological threats.

The study underscores the urgency of tightening emissions controls and investing in fireโ€‘resilience measures. Policymakers are urged to integrate the projected increase in fireโ€‘related heat into urban planning, forest management and public health strategies. Climate activists see the numbers as a call to accelerate the transition to renewable energy and to strengthen adaptation funding. As the data suggest, the choices made today will shape the safety and wellโ€‘being of children who will inherit a Europe increasingly prone to extreme fire weather.
