Carlos Alcaraz and Czech youngster Jakub Mensik teamed up to win the doubles match on Friday, giving Team Europe a 3‑1 lead over Team World after the opening day of the Laver Cup in Geneva. The pair defeated the World side of Alex de Mayo and Frances Tiafo in straight sets, clinching the decisive point that put Europe ahead in the three‑day competition.

The Laver Cup pits the best European players against a selection of top talent from the rest of the world. It is a showcase event that mixes national pride with a team format, and it often sets the tone for the upcoming hard‑court season. Europe entered the 2024 edition as the defending champions, but they have lost key matches in recent years, making the early lead crucial. Alcaraz, the world No. 2, is playing his first Laver Cup and is expected to be a cornerstone for Europe, while Mensik, ranked inside the top 30, is one of the tournament’s rising stars. Their pairing was announced after the singles line‑up was set, and both players said they wanted to bring energy and confidence to the team.

The match itself lasted just over an hour. Alcaraz’s aggressive baseline play combined with Mensik’s quick net reflexes to break serve twice in each set. They closed the first set 6‑3 and sealed the second 6‑4, leaving the crowd cheering loudly. Team World’s captain, John McEnroe, praised the effort but warned that Europe still has a long way to go. European captain Björn Borg highlighted the win as a “big momentum boost” and stressed that the next two days will be decisive, with singles matches and another doubles showdown scheduled.

Europe now needs two more points to clinch the cup, while World must win six of the remaining twelve points to stay in contention. The next day will feature four singles matches, including a marquee showdown between Alcaraz and world No. 1 Novak Djokovic. If Europe can maintain its early advantage, the Laver Cup could become another feather in the cap of a continent that has dominated the event for most of its history.
