The Alaskan cruise ship Wilderness Legacy rescued a small skiff stranded near Farragut Bay after it ran out of fuel, even though Mark Zuckerberg’s super‑yacht Launchpad was closer, according to satellite tracking data released by the Alaska Beacon and Halifax Shipping News. The rescue took place early this week when the skiff’s pilot, a local fisherman, sent a distress signal after losing power in the remote waters off the Alaska Peninsula.

Farragut Bay is a common anchorage for small fishing vessels and recreational boats, but it is also a busy corridor for larger ships such as cruise liners and cargo vessels. The Wilderness Legacy, part of the Alaska Cruise Line, was on a scheduled tour when it received the distress call. Its crew immediately deployed rescue equipment and coordinated with the U.S. Coast Guard, arriving within 45 minutes to find the skiff adrift with only 10 gallons of fuel left. In contrast, the Launchpad, owned by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, was about 1.5 nautical miles away, but its GPS logs show no attempt to respond to the emergency. The incident highlights a gap in maritime communication and the challenges of ensuring timely assistance in remote areas.

The Coast Guard is investigating whether the Launchpad’s crew had the opportunity to help and whether any regulatory violations occurred. Maritime safety regulators are reviewing protocols for large vessels operating near smaller craft, and the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation is examining whether additional safeguards are needed for rescue operations in the region. The Wilderness Legacy’s crew has issued a statement thanking the passengers for their calm cooperation and praising the swift action that saved the skiff’s crew.

The case may prompt changes in how distress signals are handled in Alaskan waters and could lead to stricter requirements for large ships to assist nearby vessels. It also underscores the importance of reliable communication systems and clear responsibilities among all maritime operators, regardless of size or ownership.
