SpaceX's stock plummeted by over 10% in early trading today despite the company reporting better-than-expected earnings. The aerospace giant posted a loss of $0.09 per share, an improvement from the $0.34 loss in the same quarter last year, and significantly better than the $0.29 loss analysts had predicted. Revenue reached $7.8 billion, surpassing the $6.8 billion forecast.

The selloff comes after CEO Elon Musk urged investors to avoid shorting SpaceX stock ahead of the earnings release. While the company highlighted its impressive 92% year-over-year revenue growth and a substantial reduction in losses, investors fixated on concerning figures. The Starlink division, which is currently the only profitable segment, saw its sales grow by just 66%. Meanwhile, SpaceX's core space operations grew by a mere 29%. Most concerning was the company's staggering cash burn of $16 billion in the second quarter, nearly doubling the $9 billion burned in the first quarter of the year.

Investor confidence appears shaken by the rapid increase in cash outflow, bringing the total cash burn for the year to $25 billion and putting SpaceX on track to potentially burn $50 billion by year-end. This alarming trend overshadows the positive growth in its AI business, which saw a remarkable 248% increase in sales but still did not turn a profit.

As analysts reassess the stockโ€™s potential, many are wary of investing in SpaceX. The Motley Fool's Stock Advisor recently highlighted ten other stocks as more promising options, drawing attention to past successes with recommendations like Netflix and Nvidia. With investors now weighing the risks of continued cash burn against growth prospects, SpaceX's future remains uncertain, and its stock could face further volatility in the coming weeks.
