Flash drive capacities are increasing rapidly, leaving smaller drives virtually obsolete. As of now, many manufacturers, such as Kingston, begin their offerings at 64GB, with some models reaching up to 512GB. This shift reflects a significant change in consumer expectations and technology, as the once-popular 1GB drives are now considered inadequate for most uses.

The rise in flash storage capacity is largely due to advancements in NAND technology. Manufacturers have developed techniques to create smaller memory cells, allowing them to pack more data into each chip. Innovations like 3D NAND technology, which stacks memory cells vertically, have enabled companies to produce high-capacity drives without increasing their size. For instance, a NAND chip developed by Toshiba and SanDisk in 2005 could store 1GB on a chip that was only slightly larger than its predecessor. This kind of innovation has driven down the cost of storage. In the early 2000s, the price per gigabyte exceeded $8,000; by 2013, it plummeted to just 94 cents.

As technology advanced, the demand for larger drives grew. Software and operating system requirements have also evolved, with tools like Microsoft's Windows installation-media tool requiring at least 8GB of storage. This has rendered smaller drives less useful for common tasks, further discouraging manufacturers from producing them. Additionally, the economics of production do not favor low-capacity drives. Although high-density NAND becomes cheaper at scale, reducing the capacity of a drive does not proportionally decrease the costs of materials and assembly.

The industry is moving toward higher capacities as consumer needs evolve. With MLC NAND production facing challenges and demand for larger storage continuing to rise, it's unlikely that we'll see a resurgence of smaller drives anytime soon. Instead, the trend suggests a future where flash drives are ever more capable, accommodating the increasing amount of data that individuals and businesses require.
