Eton Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: ETON) saw its shares climb 41.9โฏ% by 2:15โฏp.m. ET on Friday after the company reported Q2 earnings that far exceeded Wall Street expectations. The drugmaker posted a profit of $0.43 per share on $37.6โฏmillion in sales, compared with analystsโ forecast of $0.15 per share on $26.9โฏmillion.
The lift comes as Eton expands its portfolio of rareโdisease medicines. The company has just licensed the rights to a drug candidate for infantile hemangioma, called ASNโ001, from Auson Pharmaceuticals. The deal adds a new revenue stream and signals that Eton is positioning itself for continued growth. The earnings beat is part of a broader trend of companies in the specialtyโpharma space tightening margins while boosting sales through strategic licensing and partnerships.
Etonโs Q2 results show a dramatic turnaround. Sales jumped 99โฏ% year over year, and the company moved from a GAAP loss of $0.10 per share to a profit of $0.35 per share. NonโGAAP earnings were $0.42 per share. Free cash flow for the quarter was $7.3โฏmillion, bringing the yearโtoโdate total to $14.6โฏmillion. However, if the $15โฏmillion cost of the new licensing rights is deducted, free cash flow would have been negative. The expense is not a fixed cost; it appears in some years but not others, raising questions about how it should be treated in future cashโflow calculations.
Looking ahead, Eton has raised its guidance through the end of 2026, projecting revenue above $145โฏmillionโwell above the $121โฏmillion Wall Street had expected. EBITDA guidance was also increased, even with the added licensing expense. At a valuation of 94.5 times earnings, the stock is not cheap, but its rapid growth could justify the price. Investors will be watching how the new drug candidate performs and whether the licensing model becomes a steady source of revenue.
