Apple bans Telegram, keeps X despite complaints

Why does Apple keep banning Telegram, but never X?

For about an hour this week, Telegram disappeared from Appleโ€™s App Store. The sudden removal didnโ€™t last longโ€”Apple reinstated the app after a short delayโ€”but it left users in several countries unable to download or update the messaging service. Telegram is used by more than 1 billion people, many of whom rely on it in regions with heavy internet censorship, where WhatsApp, Signal, and other mainstream apps are blocked. The outage highlighted Appleโ€™s tight control over what apps can appear in its store, especially in countries where governments pressure tech companies to restrict access to certain services.

Telegramโ€™s temporary removal followed a years-long pattern of Apple and other app store gatekeepers taking action against apps that critics say violate content policies or facilitate unauthorized services. Apple has removed Telegram multiple times in the past, often after complaints from governments or user reports about illegal content shared on the platform. In 2021, Russiaโ€™s internet regulator Roskomnadzor temporarily blocked Telegram for refusing to hand over encryption keys, though the ban was later lifted. Appleโ€™s latest move suggests it may be responding to similar pressure, possibly from governments concerned about encrypted messaging apps being used to organize protests or share sensitive information.

Telegram CEO Pavel Durov called the removal โ€œabsurd and hypocritical,โ€ pointing out that Apple allows apps like X (formerly Twitter), which has faced fewer restrictions despite hosting controversial content. Many users noticed that X remained available even as Telegram vanished, raising questions about why one platform is targeted while another isnโ€™t. Apple hasnโ€™t publicly explained its decision, but the company typically cites violations of App Store guidelinesโ€”such as hosting illegal material or failing to moderate contentโ€”as reasons for removals. Telegram has argued that it complies with local laws in most countries and that its encryption protects user privacy, making it a target for governments that want to monitor communications.

What happens next could set a precedent for how Apple balances user privacy, government demands, and app store policies. If Apple continues to remove Telegram intermittently, it could push users to seek alternatives or lose trust in the App Storeโ€™s reliability. For millions of people in repressive regimes, Telegram isnโ€™t just an appโ€”itโ€™s a lifeline. The episode also raises broader questions about Appleโ€™s role in global censorship, especially as governments increasingly pressure tech companies to control digital speech. Whether Apple reverses course or doubles down, the clash between privacy, free expression, and corporate policy is only getting louder.
