Scottish Championship clubs have wrapped up summer business, bringing in 68 new players and releasing 74 so far this window. The moves follow the league’s split into two tiers next season, forcing clubs to plan for both immediate survival and future uncertainty.

The incoming transfers reflect a mix of ambition and desperation. Some sides like Dundee and Partick Thistle have spent to chase promotion, bringing in experienced Championship winners and young talent on free transfers. Others, including Inverness Caledonian Thistle, have trimmed squads after being told they’ll start next season in the bottom tier. Clubs released 74 players—14 more than arrived—partly because the new structure means fewer contracts will be renewed automatically. Agents say wages are being slashed as clubs cut costs ahead of a season where half the league could be fighting relegation under the new format.

Key signings include ex-Premiership defenders such as Liam Gordon to Partick Thistle and Scott Allardice to Airdrieonians, both arriving on free transfers after leaving higher leagues. St Mirren have loaned in two strikers from Premiership clubs as they push for an immediate return. At the other end, Raith Rovers released nine players and released manager John McGlynn after a poor finish last season. Inverness have released seven first-team players, including experienced midfielder Sean Welsh, as they prepare to drop into tier two.

The window isn’t fully shut. Some clubs still have short-term injury cover to add, while out-of-contract players can be registered until the end of August. What matters most is how these changes play out on the pitch. The new two-tier league starts in 2026, so every move now is either a gamble on promotion or a survival tactic. Clubs that overspend could face financial pain if they’re relegated. Those that cut too deep might struggle to compete at either level. One thing is clear: this summer’s transfers aren’t just about the next nine months—they’re about shaping a club’s future in a Scottish football landscape that’s about to change forever.
