Eddie Vedder took to the streets of Dublin on Sunday, playing an unannounced busk on Grafton Street in tribute to Glen Hansard, the Oscar-winning musician who has performed there for years.

Vedder, Pearl Jam’s frontman, stood in Hansard’s usual spot outside Bewley’s Café with a guitar, delivering a short set alongside local bass player Murdo Mitchell and other musicians. The surprise appearance came just days after Hansard, of The Frames and Once fame, canceled a scheduled performance at a Dublin festival due to illness. Hansard has a long history of impromptu street performances on Grafton Street, a tradition that has made him a beloved figure in the city’s music scene.

The impromptu show lasted about 45 minutes, drawing a large crowd that recognized Vedder instantly. Witnesses reported a mix of cheers and emotional reactions as Vedder played a stripped-down version of Pearl Jam’s “Rearviewmirror” and a few covers, including a nod to Hansard’s “Fitzcarraldo.” Mitchell, a frequent collaborator with Hansard, joined on bass, while other local musicians added harmonica and percussion. The performance wasn’t announced in advance, adding to its spontaneous charm.

Fans and local musicians took to social media to share videos and photos, praising Vedder’s gesture as a heartfelt tribute. Hansard, who has battled health issues in the past, is currently recovering, according to friends close to him. Vedder’s appearance isn’t just a one-off act—it’s a reminder of the power of live music in Dublin’s cultural identity. Grafton Street’s buskers have long been a draw for both locals and tourists, and Hansard’s absence left a noticeable gap. Vedder’s surprise set filled it, if only briefly, underscoring how music can bridge moments of change and loss in a city’s artistic heart.
