An independent arbitrator has ordered the Washington Post to reinstate opinion columnist Karen Attiah and award her back pay after finding the newspaper lacked sufficient grounds to fire her.

Attiah was dismissed in September 2025 following social media posts about the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk . Attiahโ€™s firing came amid a broader conservative campaign seeking professional consequences for people whose comments about Kirkโ€™s assassination were deemed offensive.

โ€œThis decision confirms what weโ€™ve said from the start: I was doing my job as an opinion writer, and this was wrongful termination,โ€ Attiah said in a statement. โ€œAfter spending over a decade of my career at the Post as an editor and an opinion columnist focusing on race, gender and global human rights, Iโ€™m relieved to finally have that record set straight.โ€

The decision was issued by private arbitrator Sarah Miller Espinosa, according to a copy obtained by Attiahโ€™s lawyers and cited by US media. Espinosa determined that the Post had violated its labor agreement and did not have adequate cause to terminate Attiah.

โ€œThe Washington Post failed to establish the grievant engaged in gross misconduct,โ€ Espinosa wrote.

The dispute stemmed from posts Attiah made on Bluesky after Kirk was killed in September 2025. In one post, she referenced past comments Kirk had made about Black women.

The Post subsequently said in Attiahโ€™s termination letter that her posts breached its social media policy. The policy requires employees to ensure their online conduct remains respectful and does not damage the integrity of the newspaperโ€™s journalism.

The ruling comes amid wider questions about the direction of the Post under Bezos , who in February 2025 announced the opinion section would reshape its editorial focus around themes of personal liberties and free markets.
