Victor Miller, the screenwriter behind the horror classic Friday the 13th, died on Monday in Alameda, California. He was 86. Millerโ€™s death was confirmed by his son, Ian. The film, released in 1980, became a defining moment in horror cinema, launching one of Hollywoodโ€™s most enduring franchises and popularizing the summer camp slasher trope.

Millerโ€™s script for Friday the 13th emerged from a low-budget horror boom in the late 1970s, when studios saw cheap thrills as a fast route to profits. Producers wanted a simple, marketable idea: a killer stalking young victims at a remote location. Miller delivered a tight, suspense-driven screenplay centered on a group of camp counselors reopening the shuttered Crystal Lake facility. The filmโ€™s modest $550,000 budget turned into a $59 million box-office windfall, proving the viability of horror as a mainstream genre. Its success spawned 11 sequels, a TV series, and a 2009 reboot, cementing Jason Voorhees as a cultural icon.

Millerโ€™s contribution was pivotal. Though he received a โ€œwritten byโ€ credit, he later revealed he had been handed a one-page treatment and given just 10 days to draft the full script. The studio made cuts and changes, but the core structureโ€”teenagers hunted one by one in a forestโ€”remained intact. Critics initially dismissed the film as exploitative, but over time it gained appreciation for its efficient storytelling and subversive twists, including the shocking reveal that the killer was not the undead Jason but his mother, Pamela Voorhees.

Miller largely stepped away from Hollywood after Friday the 13th, writing for TV and occasional film projects but rarely returning to horror. In later years, he expressed pride in his work while acknowledging its polarizing legacy. The franchise he helped launch continues to drive merchandise, video games, and merchandise, proving the enduring power of the campfire tale. Millerโ€™s death marks the end of a key chapter in horror history, one that reshaped how studios view low-cost, high-impact storytelling.
