Investors are weighing their options between two popular long-term Treasury exchange-traded funds (ETFs): the Vanguard Long-Term Treasury ETF (VGLT) and the Schwab Long-Term U.S. Treasury ETF (SCHQ). Both funds share a competitive expense ratio of 0.03% and provide exposure to long-duration government bonds, making them appealing choices for those looking to hedge against falling interest rates or economic volatility. Their similar profiles have sparked discussions on which might be the better buy for investors.

The increasing interest in these ETFs comes as market conditions shift. Both funds have experienced significant price volatility, with a maximum drawdown of 41% over the last five years. This emphasizes the risks associated with long-duration bonds, particularly as interest rates fluctuate. The Vanguard fund, launched in 2009, has a larger asset base of $10.4 billion, compared to Schwab's $0.8 billion, giving it higher daily trading volume. This can be a crucial factor for institutional and retail investors seeking liquidity.

Despite their similarities, there are slight differences that could influence investor choice. The Schwab fund offers a slightly higher dividend yield of 4.9%, compared to Vanguard's 4.8%. Each fund holds around 100 to 102 positions and focuses on bonds with maturities of at least 10 years. Vanguard's portfolio has delivered a total return of about $703 on a $1,000 investment over five years, while Schwab's has returned around $701. This indicates that performance may be closely tied, but individual preferences for yield could sway decisions.

As interest rates and economic conditions continue to evolve, both ETFs serve as useful tools for income generation and risk management. Investors must carefully consider their needs and market outlook before choosing between VGLT and SCHQ. Understanding the nuances of each fund will be critical as they navigate a potentially volatile financial landscape.
