US imposes new economic sanctions on Cuba, targeting Castro and companies

The United States has imposed a new round of economic sanctions on Cuba, targeting several Cuban companies and Fidel Ernesto Castro, the grandson of former leader Raul Castro. The announcement came from the US State Department on Thursday as part of an ongoing effort to weaken the island's struggling economy. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio described Cuba's government as a "failed state" where citizens face severe food shortages.

This move is part of a broader campaign by the Trump administration to instigate regime change in Cuba, which has been under a long-standing US embargo dating back to the Cold War. Since January, the US has intensified its sanctions, including a de facto fuel blockade, to penalize the Cuban leadership for its history of economic mismanagement and repression. Rubio further claimed that Cuba poses a national security threat by allegedly exporting Marxist ideology to other nations in the Western Hemisphere.

In response to the mounting pressure, Cuba has enacted significant economic reforms, including 176 new measures aimed at liberalizing its economy. On the same day as the sanctions announcement, Cuba introduced 34 pages of legal changes to reduce state control in various sectors, including tourism. These reforms allow private companies to establish independent travel agencies and offer more flexibility for domestic investors in opening foreign bank accounts. However, these efforts have not appeased the US administration.

Critics of the sanctions warn that they, along with the ongoing energy blockade, jeopardize the country's power grid and healthcare systems. Volker Turk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, has condemned the restrictions, stating they directly harm the Cuban populace. He highlighted that inadequate access to medical supplies has led to dire consequences, including preventable deaths among children. In contrast, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez accused the US of fabricating threats to justify its pressure on the island, underscoring the stark divide in perspectives on the situation.
