Traveling with just a backpack taught me that I don't need special clothes to exercise. I wear the same outfit for all my workouts.

A travel writer has ditched the gym bag and proven that you don’t need a wardrobe to work out. After years of hauling suitcases on six continents, she now packs one quick-dry shirt, one pair of shorts, and two sports bras for every workout—no matter the climate or activity.

The realisation came from necessity. When airlines started charging for checked luggage and hostels swapped out laundry machines for paid services, she had to travel ultra-light. That meant leaving behind separate yoga mats, swimsuits, and running shoes. What started as a packing hack became a fitness philosophy: the best workout clothes are the ones you actually carry. Experts say the trend mirrors a wider shift toward minimalist fitness. Gyms are getting smaller, hotel gyms are often understocked, and digital workouts let you train anywhere. Brands like Lululemon and Decathlon now sell “one-and-done” outfits that go from run to swim to café without a second thought.

She’s clocked workouts in deserts, airports, and hotel rooms, using the same clothes for sunrise runs, hotel-gym sessions, and even impromptu swimming. Her shorts dry in under an hour on a hostel radiator; the shirt wicks sweat in 90-degree heat and keeps its shape after a 12-hour bus ride. Trainers and physiotherapists agree: the key to consistency isn’t fancy gear—it’s having clothes you’re willing to wear. Those who switch to a single outfit report fewer excuses, less laundry stress, and more movement overall.

Now she’s sharing the wardrobe with friends who travel for work. A tech consultant in Tokyo packs the same set for early-morning gym sessions and late-night park calisthenics. A student in Berlin uses the outfit for Pilates, cycling, and café meet-ups, saving space and cash. The lesson is simple: the best workout clothes aren’t the ones with the latest tech fabric or designer logo—they’re the ones you’ll actually stuff in your backpack and use, anywhere, every day.
