Aseye Fiagbe is set to release her documentary titled โ€œToo Much Music,โ€ focused on Ghanaian keyboardist Kiki Gyan, who was a key figure in the 1970s and 80s music scene. The film will explore Gyanโ€™s life and career, shedding light on his contributions to the genre of highlife, which blends traditional Ghanaian music with jazz and funk influences. Gyan's legacy, however, has often been overshadowed by the circumstances of his untimely death at the age of 42. Fiagbe's project aims to reclaim Gyanโ€™s narrative from the shadows of tragedy.

Fiagbe, who grew up listening to Gyan's music through the band Osibisa, felt compelled to delve deeper into Gyanโ€™s story after realizing that most accounts focused solely on his demise. This realization sparked a desire to explore not only Gyanโ€™s artistic achievements but also the complexities of his life, including struggles with addiction and mental health. The documentary comes at a time when there is a growing awareness about the importance of artists controlling their own narratives, especially in the face of historical neglect and misrepresentation.

โ€œToo Much Musicโ€ is also significant in the context of Ghanaian cultural heritage. As Gyan was part of a vibrant musical era, his contributions represent a rich tapestry of Ghanaโ€™s artistic landscape. The film will include interviews with fellow musicians, family members, and music historians, providing a comprehensive view of Gyanโ€™s influence on both local and international music. Fiagbe hopes that the documentary will inspire a new generation to appreciate Gyan's work and advocate for the recognition of artists who have shaped the music industry.

The film is expected to premiere at various international film festivals, aiming to reach audiences who are passionate about music history and cultural storytelling. Fiagbe believes that highlighting Gyanโ€™s full story can contribute to a broader conversation about mental health and the pressures faced by artists. By reclaiming Gyanโ€™s narrative, she hopes to foster a deeper understanding of who he was beyond the headlines, emphasizing the need for a more nuanced appreciation of artists' lives and legacies.
