Tommy John, the former Major League Baseball pitcher whose name became synonymous with elbow surgery, died on Tuesday at the age of 83. John passed away at a hospital in Santa Monica, California, surrounded by family. His legacy extends beyond his 26-season career, which included two All-Star selections and a World Series title with the New York Yankees in 1981.

John's significance in baseball history is largely tied to the groundbreaking surgery he underwent in 1974, performed by Dr. Frank Jobe. The procedure, known as Tommy John surgery, repairs ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injuries in the elbow, allowing pitchers to return to the mound after extensive rehabilitation. At the time, a ligament tear was often a career-ending injury. Today, the surgery is common, with an estimated 50% of professional pitchers having undergone the procedure at least once. This transformation of sports medicine has saved countless careers and changed how teams manage player injuries.

Born on May 22, 1943, in Terre Haute, Indiana, John made his MLB debut in 1963 with the Chicago Cubs. He played for several teams, including the Cubs, Cleveland Indians, and Los Angeles Dodgers, but it was his second act after surgery that truly defined his career. After undergoing the surgery, John returned to the game and enjoyed a late-career resurgence, winning over 160 games after his procedure. He retired in 1989 with a total of 288 wins, placing him among the top left-handed pitchers in baseball history.

John’s passing marks the end of an era, but his influence on the game will endure. Not only did he redefine recovery from injury, but he also paved the way for a generation of pitchers to extend their careers through advancements in sports medicine. As the MLB continues to evolve, the impact of Tommy John surgery remains a critical part of the conversation around player health and performance.
