Apple CEO Tim Cook warned of a "100-year flood" in memory chip pricing during the company's latest earnings call, raising concerns among investors about potential impacts on profit margins. This warning comes as Apple prepares for a leadership transition, with Cook set to step down on September 1 and John Ternus taking over during a challenging period marked by rising production costs.
The surge in memory prices is largely driven by the increasing demand from data centers, which are processing vast amounts of information for artificial intelligence applications. This demand has created a global shortage of various memory products, leading to skyrocketing costs. Cook characterized the current situation as unexpected, explaining that it was not anticipated in earlier planning, which could pose a risk to Apple's margins in the near term. Management has already indicated that they will raise prices on iPhones and other devices to offset some of these costs.
In the third quarter of the 2026 fiscal year, Apple reported a gross margin of 50.1%, benefiting from a two-percentage-point tariff refund. Without this refund, margins would have been lower than expected. CFO Kevan Parekh noted that the change in memory costs accounted for more than 100% of the decline in gross margin, underscoring the significant impact of rising memory prices. As the company projects a gross margin of 47% to 48% for the upcoming fourth quarter, it remains uncertain how these costs will affect overall profitability moving forward.
While iPhone sales have surged by 22% year-over-year, the ongoing increase in memory prices suggests that Apple may face a challenging landscape ahead. The company has been experiencing consistent growth over the past few quarters, but analysts are cautious as they anticipate a potential slowdown. The effectiveness of Apple's price increases and cost management strategies will be critical in determining how well the tech giant can navigate this turbulent environment.
