A retro-styled, full-size keyboard without a number pad is now shipping preassembled for the first time, saving buyers the usual assembly hassle. The Classic-TKL Underscore Edition from Keychron is a tenkeyless wired board that looks like a 1980s IBM Model M but arrives ready to plug in. No screws, no switches to lubing, no stabilizers to tuneโ€”just open the box and start typing. Preorders opened today with first units leaving warehouses in Asia and due in U.S. homes by late September.

Mechanical-keyboard fans have spent years debating whether DIY build kits or factory-made boards are better. Brands like Keychron have steadily pushed preassembled models, but most kept the retro aesthetic in kit form. The new Underscore Edition is the first time a major brand has shipped a Model M clone straight from the factory. Behind the move is a simple calculation: most buyers donโ€™t want to spend an evening with tweezers and a soldering iron. The pandemic also shifted priorities; people who picked up keyboards as a hobby now want a finished product, not another project.

The keyboard keeps classic featuresโ€”a stepped PBT keycap set, Cherry MX Brown switches, and a sturdy steel caseโ€”but cuts the usual two-hour build time to zero. List price is $129, about $20 above the kit version but still under similar prebuilt retro boards. Early reviewers note the factory lube is solid, the typing feel is consistent, and the package includes a coiled USB-C cable. Keychron says it has already taken enough preorders to run a second production batch in October.

What happens next is predictable: more brands will follow with their own preassembled retro boards, and keyboard kits may start looking like a niche hobby rather than the default option. For anyone who ever hesitated to build, the barrier has just dropped.
