Iraq is facing a severe financial crisis, as Health Minister Abdul Hussein al-Musawi candidly declared at a recent meeting in Baghdad, stating, โ€œThere is no money.โ€ This comment, made to medical staff and health workers, highlights the urgent challenges the Iraqi government faces in meeting its basic financial obligations, particularly in securing salaries for civil servants and essential services amidst a crippling liquidity crisis.

The minister revealed that the government requires approximately 10.8 trillion dinars per month, equivalent to $8.24 billion, to cover salaries and other basic expenses. This financial strain comes as oil revenues, the backbone of Iraq's economy, have sharply declined due to halted exports through the critical Strait of Hormuz. The reliance on a single-resource economy has once again exposed its vulnerabilities, pushing the government to prioritize salary payments above all else.

The repercussions of this crisis are already evident on the ground. Many government employees, like Amira Ali, express growing anxiety over delayed salary payments, which have significantly affected their families' ability to meet basic needs. Another employee, Bashar Sabbar, noted that financial obligations are piling up, creating a sense of urgency and distress among workers. As salaries stagnate, living standards are expected to decline further, exacerbating the difficulties faced by ordinary citizens.

A government source indicated that the situation has deteriorated beyond mere warning signs. Total monthly salaries for civil servants, retirees, and social welfare beneficiaries reach 7.8 trillion dinars ($6 billion), but the government has only managed to disburse 3.5 trillion dinars to date, with an additional 1.65 trillion dinars from the Ministry of Finance. This leaves a significant deficit of 3.2 trillion dinars ($2.4 billion) for current salary obligations. State revenues in recent months have barely reached 3 trillion dinars, underscoring a critical gap between income and spending. Without a swift resolution, Iraq may enter a prolonged period of economic hardship, leaving its citizens to bear the brunt of the crisis.
