Some engagement ring styles, like delicate thin bands or U-prong eternity rings, arenโ€™t built for lifelong wear, according to private jeweler Anna P. Jay. In a recent interview with Business Insider, Jay called out specific designs that look stunning in photos but often fail under daily stress. Thin bands bend. U-prong settings loosen. Both leave wearers with costly repairs or a ring thatโ€™s more fragile than functional.

Why does this matter now? The engagement ring market is boomingโ€”Americans alone spent over $4 billion on them in 2023, up from $3.2 billion in 2020. Couples are prioritizing aesthetics over durability, thanks in part to social media trends pushing ultra-thin, intricate designs. But durability rarely tops the priority list when scrolling Pinterest or Instagram. Jayโ€™s warning comes as jewelers see a rise in clients returning with bent shanks or missing stones, often within just a few years of purchase.

The designs Jay flagged arenโ€™t rare. Thin bands, especially those under 1.5mm in width, can warp under pressure or snag on clothing. U-prong eternity ringsโ€”where the stones are held by a single prong on each sideโ€”often lose stones because the prongs wear down faster than traditional four-prong settings. Jay pointed to a client whose U-prong eternity ring lost three stones within a year. Other problematic styles include tension-set rings, where the stones appear to float but rely on ultra-precise metalwork that weakens over time, and pavรฉ designs with tiny, shallow-set stones that pop out easily.

What happens next? Jewelers say the answer isnโ€™t to avoid trendy styles entirely, but to know the trade-offs. Jay recommends choosing a band at least 2mm thick and avoiding U-prongs if daily wear is a priority. Couples are increasingly asking about durability alongside carat size and cut. Retailers like James Allen and Blue Nile now highlight longevity in product descriptions, adding โ€œwear-testedโ€ badges to designs that survive years of real-world use. The shift reflects a growing awareness: an engagement ring isnโ€™t just a symbol. Itโ€™s something meant to last.
