The showrunner of “House of the Dragon” has given the first official insight into Ormund’s brutal fate, Helaena’s final moments, and the fiery decisions that will haunt the Targaryen dynasty as the season 3 finale looms.

Ryan Condal told reporters this week that the battle of the Honeywine in episode 10 will see Ormund Hightower and his host crushed by Rhaenyra’s forces, ending a three-season arc that began with the Green Council’s failed coup. Helaena’s tragic death—collapsing under the weight of her own grief and a dragon’s fire—will seal the fall of King Aegon II’s line and set up the bloodiest civil war yet. Condal also acknowledged the uproar over Daeron’s bleached-blonde wig in the final episode, calling it “a visual choice about youth and vanity” that will face weeks of meme scrutiny. Season 4, he said, will open with the Hour of the Wolf and the start of Aegon III’s long reign, but only after the realm learns the true cost of dragon dreams.

The Honeywine clash was foreshadowed in episode 9 when Rhaenyra’s forces lured the Hightower army into a narrow valley, turning a river into a killing field. Condal said the sequence was designed to echo the Battle of the Blackwater, where Stannis Baratheon’s host was likewise funnelled into disaster. Ormund’s death—on-screen in a single brutal strike—reflects the show’s escalating violence and the showrunners’ refusal to soften the Dance’s brutality. Helaena’s collapse, triggered by a dragon’s roar that shatters her mind, mirrors the fate of her literary counterpart and underscores the show’s theme that madness is both weapon and inheritance.

Condal expects weeks of fan dissection, especially Daeron’s hair, which many viewers saw as a distracting anachronism. He called it “a visual shorthand” to mark the young prince’s rebellion against tradition, but admitted the wig may overshadow the episode’s heavier themes. Season 4 will pivot to Aegon III’s rule, a reign defined by grief and the last dragons’ slow extinction. Condal warned that the finale is “not a happy ending, just a hard one,” and that the coming season will force characters—and audiences—to live with the choices made in fire and blood.
