Stryker announced that its SportSuite Vision app for Appleโs VisionโฏPro headset was used in a successful hip arthroscopy at Duke Health, marking the first time the software entered realโworld practice. The company said the app received FDA DeโฏNovo authorization on Julyโฏ17, giving it clearance to be used in surgical settings.
The VisionโฏPro, Appleโs mixedโreality headset, was never aimed at the mainstream consumer market. Instead, it has been positioned for professional use where the device can overlay digital information onto a physical environment. In medicine, that means surgeons can view imaging, plans and other data while keeping their hands free and the field sterile. The technology has been waiting for a situation where its capabilities could prove useful, and a complex joint operation provided that moment.
During the procedure, Dr. Chad Mather III of Duke Health accessed Strykerโs orthopedic planning tools, arthroscopic footage and CT scans directly through the headset. He said the spatial computing allowed him to place key information where it fit his workflow, keeping it visible without leaving the sterile field. The result was a smoother operating room setup and a more streamlined surgical process, according to the surgeon.
While the headsetโs cost and the effort required to build compatible software mean it wonโt appear on every primaryโcare office in the near future, the successful use in a highโstakes surgery demonstrates the headsetโs potential.
