Veteran quarterback Teddy Bridgewater has stepped away from the NFL after the Detroit Lions placed him on the reserve/retired list. The move comes just months after Bridgewater signed a one-year deal with Detroit in March, following a single season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2025. At 33, Bridgewater leaves behind a career that spanned nine seasons, four teams, and multiple comebacks from injury and inconsistency.

Bridgewater’s departure raises immediate questions about the Lions’ backup quarterback situation. Detroit entered the season with Jared Goff as the starter and Bridgewater as the insurance policy behind him. The Lions’ offense has struggled at times this year, with Goff dealing with injuries and offensive line issues. Bridgewater’s absence means the team now has no experienced veteran behind Goff, leaving them vulnerable if anything happens to their starter. Coach Dan Campbell confirmed Bridgewater’s decision on Sunday, saying the veteran’s biggest concern was “letting us down.”

Bridgewater’s retirement marks the end of a journeyman career that saw him start for six different teams. He was a first-round pick in 2014 and led the Carolina Panthers to the Super Bowl as a rookie. His later years were defined by short stints with multiple franchises, often stepping in as a stopgap starter. His final season in Tampa Bay was modest—10 touchdowns, 5 interceptions, and a passer rating of 89.4—but he showed flashes of his old form. The Lions likely saw him as a steady hand in the locker room and a reliable option if Goff faltered.

Now, the Lions must address their backup situation quickly. With Bridgewater gone, Detroit’s third-string quarterback, college rookie Theo Shipman, becomes the de facto backup. That’s a steep drop from Bridgewater’s experience. The team could pursue a veteran free agent or trade for a mid-level option before the trade deadline. The stakes are high: Goff’s health remains a concern, and the Lions are fighting for a playoff spot. Bridgewater’s exit isn’t just about losing a player—it’s about losing a safety net in a critical moment for the franchise.
