Tedde Moore, the actress who played Ralphie Parker’s strict but kind-hearted teacher Miss Shields in the 1983 holiday classic *A Christmas Story*, has died at 79.

Moore, a Canadian character actor with a long career in film and television, passed away on Friday at her home in Toronto, according to the Hollywood Reporter. She was 79. Moore’s son is Grammy-winning producer and rapper 40, born Austin Post, who confirmed her death but did not share the cause. Miss Shields became one of the most memorable adult figures in the film, delivering the iconic line, “You’ll shoot your eye out, Ralphie,” while also offering a quiet moment of encouragement when Ralphie finally receives the Red Ryder BB gun he longs for.

Moore’s role in *A Christmas Story* was brief but pivotal, appearing in just a few scenes that shaped the film’s tone and heart. The movie, based on Jean Shepherd’s semi-autobiographical stories, has become a cultural touchstone, beloved for its nostalgic portrayal of 1940s childhood and holiday traditions. Moore’s portrayal of Miss Shields struck a balance between stern authority and warmth, making her one of the few adults in the film who genuinely seemed to understand Ralphie’s frustrations. Though she had a long career in Canadian television and smaller film roles, *A Christmas Story* remained her most famous work, ensuring her place in holiday movie history.

Moore’s death comes as interest in classic holiday films remains strong, with *A Christmas Story* leading the way. The movie airs repeatedly during the season on multiple networks, and its legions of fans keep the franchise alive through sequels, a Broadway adaptation, and a museum dedicated to it in Cleveland. Moore’s son, 40, has risen to prominence in the music industry, producing hits for artists like Kendrick Lamar and Travis Scott, and has cited his mother as a key influence in his life. While Moore’s passing marks the end of an era for those who grew up watching *A Christmas Story*, her legacy endures through the film’s enduring popularity and the generations who continue to quote its lines every December.
