TCL’s new Note A1 Nxtpaper launches in 2026 as a 12.2-inch tablet built for two jobs: writing with a stylus and watching films with a screen that looks like paper. The device arrives with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, 8GB of RAM and 256GB storage, plus a detachable keyboard that turns it into a light laptop. Pre-orders open next week with a £599 price tag.

Hybrid devices like this are getting serious attention because hybrid work is still the default for millions of office and remote workers. Microsoft and Apple have pushed premium 2-in-1s, but TCL is betting on a low-glare display and long battery life—claimed at 15 hours—to win over students and commuters who switch between note-taking and streaming. The company has quietly built a reputation for budget-friendly electronics, but the Nxtpaper line steps into higher-margin territory with premium E Ink Kaleido 3 color screens. Analysts say the move signals more brands will blend ink and LCD panels as screens become thinner and cheaper.

The Note A1’s Nxtpaper screen refreshes at 60Hz, which is fast enough for scrolling and writing but not for fast-paced games. The stylus supports 4,096 pressure levels and lags only 5 milliseconds behind a real pen, according to TCL. Built-in speakers from Harman Kardon promise richer audio for videos. Early reviewers say the hybrid concept works well in libraries and cafes where glare bothers users of glossy LCD screens. Battery life holds up even when the display is in color mode, unlike older e-ink tablets that drained quickly once they switched from monochrome.

What comes next is a software update schedule that will add handwriting recognition and OneNote integration. TCL plans a follow-up model with a 14-inch screen in 2027, aiming to challenge Samsung’s Book series. If the Note A1 sells well, expect other Chinese brands to rush in with cheaper clones, pushing prices down and features up. The real test will be whether users keep the keyboard attached all day or snap it off the moment they want a light, glare-free slate.
